THE NAME “CAMEROON” COMES FROM “RIO DOS CAMAROES” OR “CAMAROES” IN SHORT, LITERALLY “RIVER OF SHRIMPS”; THIS NAME WAS GIVEN BY THE PORTUGUESES AFTER THEY MOVED INTO THE TERRITORY IN THE FIFTEEN CACENTURY.

through a river where they found a lot of shrimps (in fact the “Wouri” river, according to the indigenous name). This name was change to “CAMEROUN” or “CAMEROON” by France and the United Kingdom when Germany left the Country after the first World War.

After being administrating by France and the United Kingdom under the SYSTEM OF MANDATE (League of Nations) and TRUSTEESHIP (United Nations), Cameroon became independent the first January 1960. 

As a sovereign Country, it was admitted at the UNITED NATIONS during the 86th plenary session of the General Assembly at the 20th September 1960.

Subsequently the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Cameroon to the United Nations was created by decree no 62/DF/247 of July 14th 1962, signed by the President of the Republic.
